C-Glass Flake Technical Data Sheet

Specifications for four standard C-glass flake grades — C-28, C-90, C-150, and C-400 — covering geometry, physical and optical properties, surface-area characteristics, chemical composition, and procurement parameters. Surface treatments: N (untreated) · V (vinyl-ester) · E (epoxy) · P (pigment).

1. Product Grades

GlassFlakes LLC produces four standard C-glass flake grades — C-28 (coarse / bulk fill), C-90 (mid-range / roller), C-150 (smooth / spray), and C-400 (ultra-fine / pigment). Grades differ primarily in median particle size (D50), aspect ratio, and bulk density. The five sub-tables below compare every grade across the parameter families that matter for coating formulation.

1.1Geometry / Morphology

Particle size is measured by sieve analysis per ASTM E11 / ISO 3310-1. D50 is the mass-median diameter; aspect ratio is the diameter/thickness ratio that governs barrier-path tortuosity in cured films.

Geometry per grade: D50, aspect ratio (Ø/thickness), and platelet thickness.

1.2Physical Properties

Bulk density determines bag yield and pack-out volume; oil absorption sets the resin-demand of each grade in coating formulations; water vapour permeability quantifies barrier performance in the cured film.

1.3Surface & Interface

Surface treatments are silane-based coupling agents matched to the binder chemistry of the target coating. The single-letter codes appended to the grade (e.g. C-90E) indicate which silane is bonded to the flake surface.

  • C-28: C-28V , C-28E , C-28N
  • C-90: C-90V , C-90E , C-90N
  • C-150: C-150N , C-150P
  • C-400: C-400N , C-400P
  • NNo surface treatment. Pigment, cosmetic, and inert filler applications.
  • VVinyl-ester silane. Vinyl-ester resin systems for marine and chemical service linings.
  • EEpoxy-compatible silane. Epoxy primers, mid-coats, and tank linings.
  • PPigment-grade (cosmetic). Cosmetic pigments and decorative finishes (C-150P / C-400P).

1.4Optical / Measurement

Refractive indices (liquid medium and particle) are reported for laser-diffraction PSD measurement (Mie theory). Obscuration level is the fraction of laser light blocked at the recommended dispersion concentration.

1.5Surface Area System

Volumetric and mass-specific surface area determine coverage per kg, oil/resin demand, and the path-tortuosity factor in barrier coatings. Values are derived from PSD + platelet geometry; finer grades (C-400) deliver dramatically higher specific surface than coarse grades.

Volumetric (m²/cc) and mass-specific (m²/kg) surface area. Values not reported for grades where measurement is not routinely supplied.

2. Chemical Composition

All grades are produced from standard C-glass (chemical-resistant glass), giving superior alkali, acid, and salt resistance compared to E-glass. Pigment-grade variants C-150P and C-400P meet cosmetic-pigment heavy-metal limits and are suitable for personal-care and decorative applications.

2.1Oxide composition (C-glass standard)

  • SiO₂: 65–72 %
  • Na₂O: 9–13 %
  • CaO: 4–11 %
  • Al₂O₃: 1–7 %
  • MgO: 0–5 %
  • K₂O: 0–1 %
  • Fe₂O₃: 0–0.4 %

2.2Heavy-metal content — pigment grades C-150P / C-400P

The C-150P and C-400P pigment-grade variants are produced under tightened raw-material control to meet cosmetic-pigment heavy-metal limits (FDA 21 CFR §73 / EU 1223/2009 Annex IV reference levels). Typical residual heavy-metal levels:

  • As: 0.9 ppm
  • Pb: 2 ppm
  • Hg: 0.1–0.2 ppm
  • Sb: 0.1–0.2 ppm
  • Cd: 0.1–0.2 ppm
  • Cr: 11.8 ppm
  • Zn: 11 ppm
Physical reference values (all grades): melting point 930-1020°C · softening point ~688 °C · high resistance to acids, alkalis, and neutral salts.
